Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway
The Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway is one of seven, scenic byways in the state of Illinois, including the Great River Road, the Illinois River, the Lincoln Highway, the Meeting of the Great Rivers, the National Road (All American Road), the Ohio River and Route 66.
The Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway is unique because of the significance of the three rivers meeting within 25 miles of each other, the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois. The confluences of these three rivers have attracted people to the are a for centuries and have shaped the lives of people in Southwestern Illinois for thousands of years.
The designation of the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway has brought national attention to the spectacular scenery, archeological finds, historic happenings, cultural experiences and memorable recreation. Recently, the byway was named as one of the "Seven Wonders of Illinois". Taking a drive along the byway and its communities is a new encounter each time you the region.
All along the byway, visitors can find scenic and natural points of interest, along with communities full of history and culture to share. From migrating waterfowl to riverfront concerts and fall colors to fine dining, the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway is a mecca of outdoor recreation, history and unique stories, all shaped by the three rivers and waiting to be shared.
The 33-mile byway starts at the intersection of Illinois Route 3 and New Poag Road in Hartford. It follows Route 3 to the intersection of Illinois Route 143 North along the Mississippi River to US 67 in Alton. The byway continues to Illinois Route 100, following 25 miles of river bluffs to its end at Pere Marquette State Park in Grafton.
